Hello,

This message would typically house our monthly newsletter. Given the recently announced layoffs at Stelco, the focus of this brief newsletter is on the support programming available to tariff-impacted employees and employers.

At present, the Economic Development team is collaborating with Hamilton’s industry and employment support partners and helping to facilitate a coordinated response within the City of Hamilton.

If you have been impacted by layoffs, Employment Ontario offers laid-off workers free, comprehensive support to help them navigate job loss and re-enter the workforce. Through a network of community service providers, job seekers can access one-on-one career counselling, professional resume writing and interview preparation, and targeted job-search strategies. Additionally, laid-off individuals may qualify for programs like Better Jobs Ontario, which provides financial assistance—covering tuition, books, transportation, and basic living allowances—to help candidates retrain or upskill for in-demand careers. Laid-off workers can connect with Employment Ontario through this link.

For companies facing liquidity challenges due to tariff impacts, we encourage you to reach out to the Economic Development team so that we can provide you with connections to the federal government and the Regional Tariff Response Initiative. This program can provide up to $2 million of non-repayable funding for qualifying businesses that are impacted by tariffs.

Information on all other support programs can be accessed through Invest in Hamilton’s trade and tariff hub. Economic Development staff remain available to connect on any issue your business may be facing.
